HP970 and USB problem

Dear all -

Ages ago, I had great trouble installing my Deskjet 970 on a usb port,
but I finally managed it.

I had to uninstall it recently, fool that I am, and now it will not
reinstall.

I downloaded scr_970.exe from the HP website which is supposed to
'scrub' all entries from the registry. I also download the latest driver
from the HP website (ver 4.3). Also, I've done the obvious things like
deleted all reference to the 970 in the printers folder, system/devices.
etc. No good.

When I run the downloaded exe driver file, it gets as far as telling me
to plug in my cable, which I do. Then it keeps telling me it can't find
the printer. I know the usb port works because I've tried other kit on
it, and it worked before.

I've tried going round the program by using add printer in the printers
folder, but that's no good, because I can't direct it anywhere when it
says 'have disk'. That's because the downloaded driver file hasn't
unpacked all the files yet, and won't until it finds a printer!
Catch 22.

I've tried all the obvious things, ensuring that relevant software and
hardware is all deleted. Days of wasted work.

HELP!

TIA

Tony

What OS?, Can't you install the driver as a network printer and hook it
up later? Years ago, before the scrubber was released I had a heck of a
time installing my 970 after a failed partial install. I had to go into
the registry and delete crap loads of stuff. One registry value you can
try first is the printer serial number on the bottom of your printer.
Just search your registry for the SN and delete every instance of it.
Just be sure to back up your registry before doing anything.

Thanks for the reply. I did post earlier that I had solved the problem -
although it wasn't quite clear to me what I had done. Your idea of
searching for the printer's SN in the registry is brilliant. I'll keep
your post.

I should have said that the OS is Win98. Given the printer installation
routine you get with HP, I don't see how I could have installed it as a
network printer, since the install program was refusing to recognise
that a printer was hooked up. Same problem if I went through the Add
Printer routine in the printers folder.

Thanks again for the suggestion.
