I dealt with an 820cse having the exact same problem after suffering a paper
jam. The carts would collide at pretty good force with the printer's left
side and a software error message would pop up saying communications was
lost. Sounds like all hell breaking loose when they collide with the left
side. I was baffled and gave up, so I can't help specifically, but another
guy continued with the task and got it to work again within a few minutes
and it works fine up to this day. Something got bent or misaligned due to
the jam.

Sorry I can't help further... but I guess I'm trying to say don't give up on
it. I've seen it happen and it can be fixed.

PROBLEM: Color cartridge cradles will not stay on right side of printer
where it belongs while waiting for a print job. It will go to the right and
then quickly slide over to the left fast enough to slam against the side.
The resume and power lights are blinking together which according to manual
indicates the print cartridge cradle is obstructed. All this occurs after
clearing a paper jam. I have removed cartridges (twice) and reinserted,
reloaded printer driver from original disks supplied with printer, removed
paper tray and reinserted, changed ports, checked cables, etc.

I cannot print a thing; keeps coming back with communication lost with
printer message - both lights blinking - printer cartridges on left side of
rail (instead of right in its proper hold position).

Anything else I can try?????? I am at my wits end.

I just took an hp5L laser printer to the recycling center after declaring it
a piece of junk not worthy of even donating to Goodwill.

Any opinions on Brother laser printers????
