Hello.

I hope someone outthere can help me. My HP Laserjet 5L has recently begun to
make bad prints.

I´ve tried to clean the laser/scanner mirror without any changes.

I´ve tried with another toner cartrigde - still the same.

Try to take a look at the image I´ve uploaded to dk.binaer:

It seems it get worse from the left side towards the right side of the
paper.

Is there any cure, or shall the oldtimer finally rest at the scrapper?

Best regards

How many pages were printed during the printer's life?
The fuser unit could be on its way out.
Easy to change yourself.
Easy to find a supplier (google search)
Costs about 100 euros.

Try a different paper, one having the specifications recommended by the
manufacturer for your laserjet.

Do an engine test first and post it if possible. To do an engine test,
you will find a small button at the bottom, close to the front,
underneath the paper output slot. With some paper in the tray, the
printer powered on and the printer cable from the computer
disconnected, push the button. You should get one printed page with
lots of vertical lines on it. As is, I would suspect that the pickup
rollers and the separation pad/sub pads are worn and may need
replacement. Try to post an image of the entire page if at all
possible.

Thanks a lot. I´ll try that as soon as possible, and report back the result.

Hello Frank.

I´ve made the test, and you can find the result here:

(I had to put it there, because I couldn´t upload such a big file to my
newsserver :-( )

Best regards

I had a look at the printout. To put it in one word. Yuck! It looks
as if you need to replace some parts and do some cleaning on your
printer. I will post the HP-5L service manual for you on
alt.binaries.e-book.technical newsgroup as it would take way too long
to explain how to do what needs to be done. But you should order a
registration/transfer roller, pickup roller , separation pad and sub
pads and replace them The part numbers are as follows: Transfer Roller
= RF5-1534-000CN ($25.00 USD from HP), Pickup Roller Assembly =
RG5-3486-040CN ($25.00 USD from HP), and Separation Pad/Sub pad Kit =
RY7-5077-000CN ($22.00 USD from HP) Depending on where you live, you
can usually get these items from third party vendors for about a 1/4
to 1/3 what you'd pay for from HP.

Go through the service manual for instructions on how to take your
printer apart and how to replace the parts. While you have the printer
apart, you should clean the 2 rollers that sit under the pickup roller
assembly with some Rubber Renue (that's what it's called here in
Canada, don't know what it would be called elsewhere. Never use
alcohol to clean the rollers. also check your fuser sleeve and the
pressure roller underneath it as well. If the sleeve on the fuser has
a build up of toner on it, this can be cleaned off with alcohol (99%
pure Isopropyl please, not the rubbing alcohol). Just put some of the
alcohol on a paper towel and with a little elbow grease, you should
eventually be able to get the toner off. Be carefully. If there are a
lot of wrinkles or the outer coating of the pressure roller looks like
it's delaminating from the core, replace it as well. If there are any
tears in the fuser sleeve, replace the fuser. In case you need the
fuser and pressure roller , their part numbers are: Fuser =
RG5-1964-020CN ($82.00 USD from HP), Pressure Roller = RF5-1516-000CN
($35.00 USD from HP).

While your at it, give the exit rubber rollers a cleaning with the
Rubber Renue as well.

Even if you have to replace all of the parts above, once done, your
printer should last you another few years without problems. Best of
luck.

Thanks a lot - don´t really know if it´s worth it - a new laserprinter can
be bought for around 1500,- dkk ( 220 euro ), but I do have some extra toner
cartrigdes for the old HP..... So perhaps I should try to find a local
dealer and find some prices for the parts you have described.

Best regards
