Using HP4540 & XP home.
Was working fine until thunderstorm last night. Now won't boot up. Sounds
like HD makes a few clicks, than stops. Only way to shut down is to unplug.
When plug back in, even afer extended wait, fan and HD start right up. HD
cllicks few times than stops. Discovered if hold start stwich in when plug
unit in, unit will shut down in few seconds. When restarted, same problem.

Do I have power supply problems, or is it a software problem. Any ideas will
be appericated.

Switch first, power supply second and HD third is my bet.

Shop time with someone that has a circuit tester may be in order.

Clicking noises from a hard drive are never a good thing. More often than
not, it signifies failure of the drive.

Iam a novice at this but i am finding an annoying thing at start up in that
it comes up with messeges saying it cant find 4 files. these files make no
sense to me since they aer all in strange characters. can anyone help.

Could be that the hard drive, power supply or both are cooked. Power surges
and spikes can destroy unprotected electronic equipment.
