I have an old HP 4 Plus that came with a duplexer. I have no idea how
to make it work. The windows driver picks it up as an option, but it
will not print duplexed.

I refuse to pay the ridiculous price that HP wants for a thin
manual.

Can anyone tell me how to make it work? I'm sure it is something
quite simple that I am missing.

Thanks in advance.

If it's working OK, it'll just work.

Step 0: print a test page. Does it say it's detected the duplexer as an
option? If not, check the contacts on the post that pokes up into the
printer.

Step 1: try using the control panel to turn on duplexing all the time. I
think it's on the Printing menu; use Item Key to go to Duplex, press the
Enter key to get the asterisk beside it, then put the printer oline. If
it duplexes now, then you need to recheck software setup.

Step 2: if it still doesn't duplex, you probably have a hardware
problem. There's a flap inside the bit at the back the redirects the
paper into the slot at the back after printing one side. If that doesn't
operate, then you have a duplexer fault. Examine the solenoid and wiring
carefully. You can quite clearly hear it 'clonk' when it operates.

Relying on memory, make sure that its AC plug is plugged in and see
whether there's a setting in the LCD setup window to tell the printer
that it is present. Printing out a self-test sheet should reveal
whether the printer knows it exists.
