After 3 years of operation, my HP3320 suddenly complains with 'scanner
failure'. Sometimes I switch of the unit and it comes backup ok and
sometimes it comes up with this error and cannot reset it.
A good friend bought the same printer at exactly the same time and is
having the same problem.

Because of the failing scanner I can't use it as a printer, is there anyone
who knows a workaround ?

THE FOLLOWING IS THE PRIMARY REASON WHY I RECOMMEND AGAINST A
MULTI-FUNCTION DEVICE AND I HAVE PROFESSED MANY TIMES HERE THAT WHEN ONE
DEVICE GOES BAD THE OTHER DEVICES ARE NO LONGER A GOOD VIABLE OPTION TO
USE AND THE ENTIRE DEVICE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ALSO I HAVE SAID THAT
IF THERE ARE NEW FEATURES AND DESIGNS IN ONE OF THE DEVICES YOU CANNOT
JUST UPGRADE THAT WITHOUT THE ENTIRE MACHINE.

THE ONLY REASON TO CONSIDER A MFP IS A SEVERE SPACE CONSTRAINT AND YOU
WANT AN AUTO SHEET FEEDER WITH THE SCANNER SINCE THAT ATTACHMENT TO A
REGULAR SCANNER IS EXPENSIVE.

BUT AS USUAL THE CHURCH GOING AFTERMARKET INK REFILLING IDIOTS KEEP
TELLING ME I DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. WELL READ THE BELOW
PARAGRAPH ANDYOU WILL FIND OUT JUST WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

This is a known problem with the Laserjet 3300 MFP series.

1.Firstly make sure you have the latest drivers and software installed, go to
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Look...&h_query=laserjet+3320&submit.x=10&submit.y=4
Select your product,operating system etc.
2. Download and install the latest firmware after reading the instructions on
the download page from
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...rodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=66359&taskId=135
Select your product and then select "Cross operating system (BIOS, Firmware,
Diagnostics, etc.)" then select "hp LaserJet 3300 firmware update for Windows"
read the instructions on this page and then download and install the firmware
patch.

Long URLs, you may have to cut and paste into your browser

If that does not work then perform an NVRAM reset as follows.
Turn printer off.
Press and hold the * and the Menu/Enter key.
Whilst still holding these keys power the printer on, do not release the keys.
Wait until the message "Permanent Storage Init" is displayed then release the
keys.
Wait for the ready light before doing anything else.

If this fixes the problem you will have to reset the Language and
Country/region codes before you can use the FAX.
Sometimes this will work and sometimes it will not, if it does work it may not
work for ever.

If this does not fix it the only way I know to fix the problem is to buy a
replacement scanner assembly and have it fitted or fit it yourself if you have
the skills. It isn't all that difficult. Unfortunately the scanner assembly is
expensive, HP lists the part as $184 or thereabouts, but you may be able to get
it cheaper elsewhere. There may be a way to make the printer work without the
scanner being functional but I do not know how, I have seen a reference without
any detail in the laser printer forum at www.fixyourownprinter.com, you might
try posting a question there.

Measekite seems to get into a feeding frenzy when someone has a problem, be
assured that the rest of us are here to help and just ignore him.
Good luck

Sorry Ben I forgot one thing. Are you using a power conditioner? If so try the
printer direct to the mains before you do anything else. These and many
printers can do strange things when a power conditioner is used, especially if
the rating of the conditioner is close to the current draw of the printer.

You have demonstrated one of the problems with all in one products (of
any brand). They tend to have parts that are dependent on one another
and if one section fails the whole product can become useless.

This type of error in scanners often is due to the scanner arm not
moving correctly. It can often be caused by either build up of
dirt/dust on the transport beam/guides of the scanner arm, or just the
lubrication having dried out.

Unfortunately, I don't have a service manual for these, so I don't know
how they dismantle and what is involved in getting at the transport
guides. Scanners need to be handled with care to avoid damaging the
transport mechanism, the calibration areas, the mirrors and the wiring
harnesses. Sadly, more and more, these devices are becoming
"disposable" by their very design, but a 3 year old model should be
better built and might be worthwhile getting repaired.

Good news : the printer is up and running again !!
A dirty mirror inside the scanner caused the problem, after cleaning it
works like before !

Thanks to all who responded.
