Thinking about the 2605, but the only sensible location for it has
limited space and accessibility. So I need to know where the power
switch is. Any kind soul out there willing to tell me?

Funny, you can find out that it works with both XP Home and XP Pro, the
weights of every variant, but not where the flaming power switch is! And
I just don't seem to be able to get my eyes on it in any of the pictures
I have found.

Thanks

It is on the back cover near the top roughly at the centre. You can reach it by
putting your hand over the top of the printer if you are tall enough otherwise
you need to reach around one side. The user guide may have an image that helps
and that can be downloaded from HP.

Thanks, Tony. I did go to HP's site and looked at the printer specs,
etc., but stopped short of the user guide. I have now gone there and
found what you described.

Damn, damn, damn - still looking for a colour laser printer with a power
switch that is easily accessible from the front - or just 'round the
corner' down the side.

Assuming it's the CLJ2605, the power switch is on the back, upper-right,
below the output tray, next to the power cord connector. On page 8 of
the manual, downloadable in PDF format from HP. The 2605dn is now
on sale in Canada for $399.99 CDN at BestBuy.

You could always put it on a power strip.

Yes - but is that a good way to treat the printer? I'm never sure if it
makes any real difference (assuming I don't switch it off in the middle
of printing) - does it?

If the "power switch" on the printer is a "real" power switch, then a
power strip is no different .... no better, no worse.

However, it's possible that the printer (as many computers) doesn't even
have a "real" power switch (one that actually turns off the power ...
ALL power). In that case, the printer might not like the power strip idea.

The power switch on this printer is a real one, it isolates the mains from the
printer and therefore a power strip will do the job admirably.

I have never turned mine off. It has a sleep mode. The printer plugs into
the network switch and is our default printer for 3 computers. Works great.
I wish all my printers worked that way.

Thanks all.

Unfortunately, the room where the printer would be located has to double
up as a bedroom. So that is not the best idea for us.

Mine is 5 feet from my bed. It is silent except when printing.

Even the sleep mode consumes 12-15W of electricity. Doesn't sound a lot
but mounts up over a year.

I switch mine off if I know I'm not going to print for more than a few
hours i.e. overnight.

Rod-

My HP 2605dn has its power switch directly below the right edge of the
output tray. It is 4 inches down from the top and 3 1/2 inches in from
the right side. I can stand in front of the printer and reach the
switch from the top with my right hand.

The 2605 is small compared to some other laser printers, but is larger
than many ink jet printers. Going by its measurements may be deceptive.
You need to see one in person!

I leave mine on all the time, but it isn't in a bedroom. It is normally
in sleep mode, but will make noise when it calibrates itself several
minutes after the last time it was used.

You must have a different 2605dn from mine then, mine is on the rear panel
next to the power connector.

Mine is also on the rear panel next to the power connector. It can be
reached from the front by extending your fingers down over the back edge
at the right side of the output tray.

I forgot to say "rear panel", but someone else had already established
that.

About a $1 per month.

Depends on your electricity charges. It's a lot more than that here in the
UK.

7.5 cents per kilowatt. Of course I leave a lot more on. Cable modem,
router, switch, scanner and 2 computers. I do turn off one printer and one
computer for noise reasons. For 7 months I assume this contributes to my
heating. My big energy burner is my pond pump which runs 24/7.
