I have an early-model (I think) HP2000c printer. It came with
drivers, of course, but it also a nice utility program or suite. The
utility program would pop up windows on command that graphically
showed estimated remaining ink cartridge capacity, printhead
functionality, etc. The printer works swell under WinNT4 and
Win2k---I'm currently on Win2k (with all service packs applied).
However, the utility program won't install. I _can_ put it on other
machines I've got lying around, running Win98 and WinMe, so the
problem appears possibly to be OS-related. I find nothing on the HP
"support" site concerning this issue, and I won't pay them money to
chat on the phone with me about why their printer software won't work
under what's supposed to be a fully supported OS.
Has anybody run into this problem? More particularly, does anyone
know of a (potential) fix?
If no fix is known, would someone kindly recommend a more current
printer I with which I can replace the 2000c, and which uses separate
ink cartridges for each color (like my 2000c does---I _hate_ buying
expensive multicolor cartridges when just one color has run out).
Should be as fast as is reasonably possible (within price constraints,
$250 to $400 or a bit more---no color lasers!) on document printing,
and acceptable for simple color graphics (i.e., it need not be a great
photo printer). Operating costs are a big factor in choosing a new
printer, because it will get pretty heavy use for a printer only
servicing one workstation.
