Sometimes when I open my HP laptop, the screen goes dim. I can see the
desktop if I look closely. Sometimes if I close the lid halfway, then
open it, it goes back to normal. Usually I just have to restart. Also
sometimes when I restart and touch the keyboard to type, the screen goes
dim again. It seems to be reacting to my touch. I turned off the
screensaver and have all the power options set to "NEVER," but it still
happens occasionally. Is my screen dying?

Check the TEENSY switch that detects when the screen is closed. It's usually
on the bottom half of the laptop as close to the screen hinge as possible.

Sounds like some dirt/junk is lodged in there making the laptop think the
screen is closed and turning off the backlight.

Thanks for the suggestion. How do I clean this efficiently and safely?

Another thing...
When the screen goes dark, sometimes I do press that switch, but nothing
changes.

Switch could be defective, or the electronics connected to it.

I'd try a bit of compressed air or shake it upside down.

After that, I'd be pulling it apart myself, but laptops aren't easy to do.

It may even be a loose wire on the light itself.
