I am ready to dump windows 98 for windows XP. Will my HP 895cse printer
using the printer port and my HP 4100C scanner using USB be supported
and work with Windows XP or will I have to purchase new units?

Thank you

Both are supported under Win XP. You can download XP drivers from HP at
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html . Specifically, drivers for
the Scanjet 4100C can be downloaded from:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwa...t47301&sw_lang=en&submit.y=8&submit.x=2&cc=us
and the DeskJet 895 printer driver can be downloaded from:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwa...88116&sw_lang=en&submit.y=11&submit.x=6&cc=us

CWatters, I also have the 895 cxi working but not as satisfactorily as under
Win 98. Now it is virtually impossible to cancel some printing job
instantly, which used to be possible by hitting the on-off button under Win
98. Also, annoying is the fact that under Paperport, for example, it starts
printing the last page first. I really think this XP driver is no good.

Could you report whether you've got the same problems or not?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I've always had problems cancling print jobs and can't see that much
difference between Win98 and Win95 in this respect.

You can change the default page printing order easily...

Double click on the printer icon
Select Printer -> Printing Preferences -> Layout Tab ->Page order button.

I have been using the 895cse with Win XP Pro for about a year now. I
would suggest downloading the most recent HP driver from the HP site,
rather than using the Windows resident driver.

My wife prints to it through our home LAN using 98SE, also no problem.

I have experienced the print cancellation issue mentioned elsewhere.
More important, it can be almost impossible to reset the printer after
an aborted print job -- it just keeps spitting out pages. However, I
view this as a printer problem, not an OS problem. Sometimes I have to
pull the plug on the printer and then restart my computer in order to
get the printer behaving again.

The easiest way to kill a print job is to restart the print spooler.
Start > Run > net stop spooler
wait about 5 seconds
Start > Run > net start spooler
wait another 5 seconds and you can start printing again.

The cancellation problem is not a printer problem. It is a driver one. Under
Win 98 it was enough to press the on/off switch to cancel any job and have
the printer reset almost instantaneously.

If you go to the HP driver site, there is no driver for the 895 cxi, just
some troubleshooting info which does not in any way adress this problem.
