HP Update problem

I have an older Win2K computer with an OfficeJet 7310. A few weeks ago,
HP Update said there were updates available. One for HP Update itself,
and a few others I forget.

It first tried to update itself to what I assume is verison 5.2 (I don't
know what was on there before.) There appeared to be some errors when it
tried to uninstall the old version. But then when it tries to install
the new version, I get this:

Product: HP Update -- Error 1904.Module C:\Program Files\Hp\Common
\HPeDiag.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your
support personnel.

I've uninstalled (which causes Add/Remove to abrubtly terminate) and
reinstalled, all with the same problem. I have downloaded the latest
version from HP.

I have tried to manually register the file with regsvr32, and get 'Load
Procedure Not Found'. I wonder if the file is actually supported under
Win2K, although the download says it is.

This isn't a big deal, as it's an old computer mainly used as a backup,
but I would like to keep it up to date. Any ideas on what is going on?

Any ideas on trying to find an installer for an older version?

I am not HP literate enough to help you, but isn't this kind of
situation maddening, when the new fix just corrupts things and makes it
impossible to fix without major registry work?

You might wish to contact Bob Hedrick, who has quite a bit of HP driver
knowledge and has some awareness of HP website goodies. He might be
able to help direct you to the right place.

One of the benefits of a drive image is that you can roll
your system, and registry, back to a prior date, in a matter

to do, for those OS's that have Restore.
It's not clear whether the printer still works and just the
HP updata failed, or whether he has the origingal driver
disk and has tried reinstalling from it.

You are so correct, Zee. I don't know why more people don't clone the
drive. I have all my towers cloned to secondary drives that are
unplugged when not in use. On the laptop I have a 200GB Maxtor USB
drive to clone to. It only takes a few minutes to copy and you have a
guarantee of protection. Plus, if something goes mechanically bad with
the original hard drive you are still good to go with the clone. Also,
I maintain a file of saved old programs. I download such programs as
the HP print driver to the desktop, run it, and then store the program
in the file so I can always reload that if needed.
My opinion for the OP is that if you have an elderly system set up and
running well, stay with it and not try to tweak every device and
program with an update. You really have nothing but grief to gain.

I have a HP K8600dn printer and an running XP with the printer hooked
up with the network plug. With HP update installed my cpu usage was
costantly at 100%. So I uninstalled all the driver stuff and
reinstalled without the HP update option. My cpu usage is now
around 2%.
For crying out loud, it is just a printer, forget the update option.

Part of the reason is that HP has had several security issues with
drivers and related software.
