HP Scanjet G4050

Recently I bought this scanner, and I am having trouble trying to remove it
and re-install it.I noticed that it is not showing up in 'Scanners &
Cameras' hardware section of device manager. I am using Windowsxp pro with
sp3 and all updates installed. I have looked at the HP site which is useless
in this respect, and when I try through install and remove programs it stays
there. I did read by Googling the problem that for private use one should
install it as an administrator through Administrative tools, but gave no
instructions for the procedure. I am the sole user of my computer and would
appreciate any help that may be forthcoming; I'm sure the scanner should be
showing in 'devices'.

Any help from the manual ?
 
.... have you double check your connections(power and data/usb cable?. trying
unplugging, wait a few seconds and plug back in.
is the power cable connected to a power switch that is turned off?, has the
power switch on the scanner turned off or not quite on?
