Scanner connected via USB

When scanner is connected to a Windows 98 PC, remote share works from
Windows XP SP2 PCs.

When scanner is connected to a Windows XP SP2 PC, remote share doesn't
work from a Windows 98 PC, nor from another Windows XP SP2 PC.

Tried different versions of HP PrecisionScan Pro from CD and from
internet with no luck.

Ggggggrrrrrrrrr .... !!!!

On Windows XP SP2:
Did you set the network share for the scanner in My Network Places?
By default most of the file and printer sharing is turned off.

File and print sharing for Microsoft Networks in 'on'
for the XP PC attached to the scanner, and all other
PCs on the LAN (one Win98, one Win2000 and one other
XP PC).

I do not know where the USB device would show up in
a list in order to share it (like you would a printer
or a driver letter).

I thought the purpose of the HP PrecisionScan LAN
Host 2.0 program was to do the sharing of the device
at the operating system level (the displayed 'Network
Protocol supported' is TCP/IP).

At least that's how it works when the hosting PC of
the scanner is running Win98. When the host is WinXP,
I get the annoying 'Sorry, scanner could not be
initialized' message from within the HP PrecisionScan
Pro application (v2.03).

In XP sp2, did you allow file sharing and the scanner programs to be an
exception in the firewall setting?

File sharing turned on in all 4 of the PCs in my network. I have
shared all their drives and printers. All drive letters and printers
are visible and accessible from any of the PCs.

The Windows XP firewall is turned off on the 2 XP PCs. I have an SMC
router to protect my network from the internet and run the free
version of ZoneAlarm to protect me from trojans and spyware.

As a test, I shutdown ZoneAlarm and virus scanners on all PCs in my
network. I made sure the scanner share program (HP PrecisionScan LAN
Host: Enabled) was running on the XP PC with the scanner attached.

I can scan from the XP PC that the scanner is attached to. But when I
open PrecisionScan Pro from any of the other PCs, I get the 'sorry,
scanner could not be initialized' message.

If I connect the scanner to the Win98 PC and run the scanner share
program, I can scan from any of the other PCs on my network with no
problem.

Is there actually something I have to do within Windows XP to make the
USB scanner visible to the other PCs? Or, is there an updated driver
for XP that I can't find (I've looked on the internet and there are
some minor patches from years ago, which I tried, but to no avail.)

2 of the 4 PCs on my network are XP SP2. Neither have the Windows
firewall active. I am protected from the internet by an SMC router.

All 4 PCs have file sharing enabled. All printers and drives are
shared, can be seen and used from any of the PCs.

As a test I disabled ZoneAlarm and virus software. I made sure the HP
Precisionscan LAN Host was 'enabled'. I still get the 'scanner cannot
be initialized' error.

I can scan only from the XP PC that is connected to the scanner - not
from any of the other 3 PCs. If I connect the scanner to the Win98
PC, all 4 PCs can successfully scan.

Do I actually have to do something else in XP to share the scanner?
It's not a device that shows up in a list that I can set properties
on. Is there a driver update I should run to make it work with XP? I
installed sj630en.exe and sj674en.exe, but that didn't help.

It's not much help but I had the same problem after installing XP SP2
on the machine that was sharing the scanner and the one connecting to
it. I tried all combinations of turning the XP firewall on and off and
allowing the HP applications to access within the firewall settings,
but nothing worked.

I uninstalled SP2 from both machines and bingo! Everything started
working perfectly as before.

Looks like SP2 breaks the hpscnsvr.exe application that shares the
scanner. It was never the most reliable app at the best of times, but
I guess that something has changed on the network side of things which
stops it working, irrespective of the firewall settings.

If you can't (or don't want to) uninstall SP2 then I guess that you'll
have to wait for HP to get around to fixing whatever it is that's
stopping it working.
