I have come by the above HP scanner but don't know if it is worth the agro
trying to set it up.
Can anyone advise please?

Facts are:

PC to which this was attached has died, therefore cannot retrieve drivers
etc.
The device is SCSI and I think it is this card that has failed causing the
original machine to hang.
Do I have to get the self same SCSI card to get this thing up and running?
Any issues with this device on NT4?
How do I install a SCSI card?

Any help/advice gratefully received.

TIA

"agro"? Abbreviation for "aggravation" is "aggro".

Webpage at
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html#Z-HEWLETT-PACKARD
says the device is straight SCSI, so any real SCSI card should work.
You don't need the latest and greatest Adaptec 9700 FooBar if you're
just going to be running a scanner off this SCSI card, so check
pricewatch.com and eBay for something a little cheaper. I haven't had
great luck with Symbios SCSI cards, but YMMV.

It's an older device, so it should work provided you can find a 'DozeNT
equivalent for a SANE backend for it. ("Device driver for the scanner"
in Windows-speak.) Remember that 'DozeNT has been EOLed and a lot of
the latest and greatest commercial crapware may have weird problems with
it, and device support for new hardware may be lacking or totally
nonexistent. Time to upgrade to a Real OS, or if you can't do that,
upgrade to 'Doze2K.
How do I install a SCSI card?

Open case. Insert SCSI card into PCI slot, making sure it's firmly
seated. Close case. Boot machine. Wait for "Windows has detected some
new hardware..." and hope to $DEITY it doesn't barf and corrupt various
important system files before asking for manufacturer's driver disk.
Put CD-ROM that came with SCSI card in CD-ROM drive. Tell Device
Mangler to search for drivers on X: where X is the drive letter you've
assigned to the CD-ROM. If that doesn't work, use "open file"
dialog to point the Device Mangler directly at the .INI file for the
device you're trying to install.

Make sure the cables and termination on the SCSI chain are properly set
up, too. If that doesn't help, get yourself a black goat, a copy of
_Liber al vel Legis_, and a sharp knife, then sacrifice the goat to the
SCSI chain at midnight, following the directions in the book. HTH,
