I reviewed the group on this topic and tried this fix that worked for
me. The scanner was grinding continually everytime plugged in. It had
done this off and on for awhile, but now was pretty steady. Removed
the lid (easy). Removed the glass and blue glass frame by carefully
pushing in the two white plastic tabs holding the blue frame found in
the slots that hold the transluscent white top once removed. While
these tabs held open, carefully slid a screwdriver along long edge
between the joint between blue top and white bottom and twisted to pop
two plastic tabs on each side (4 in all) holding the blue top to the
bottom. Behind the scanhead above the circuit board is a black
u-shaped object which has an optical sensor in it. The beam is
interrupted by a blue plastic tab extending from the blue plastic
glass frame just removed. You can test that the beam is working by
plugging it in, then sticking something opaque in their which will
shut off the motor. When in home position, the stepper motor shuts
down because the scanner backs the u-shaped switch into this tab.
Somehome, my tab and slot were apparently not aligned. I "enlarged"
the blue tab slightly by sticking a trimmed piece of adhesive backed
white label on the tab. I put the unit back together and it works
fine. Total time for fix, 5 minutes. Total time to figure it out. 1/2
a day.
