After a couple years of good performance my hp psc 2310 all-in-one
would turn on with a "Scanner failure' message. I couldn't do
anything with it. No printing, and certainly not scanning. The
scanner light would start it's initialization but would never stop.
It continued to bang against the side of the interior. After about a
minute of this the display would give the error message and tell me to
turn it off and back on again.
Troubleshooting guides concerning the symptoms didn't help me. The
below link to HP describes the problem, but their solutions didn't
seem to help.

What I THINK solved the problem was to simply clean the scanning
glass. Below is a link to hp describing how to do this.

While I was doing all of this I did use some compressed air to blow
any dust out of the scanner cavity. I wiped clean a couple mirrors
that I found on the underside of the scanner arm.
I have printed successfully, though I haven't tried to scan yet.
Anyway, hope this helps someone!
