I have recently purchased one of these printers and when I copy or
scan anything I get an error message, 'Scanner Failure, Turn power
off, then on again'

The scan seems to have worked Ok, but to do a second copy I have to
turn the printer off & on again as advised.

I have followed the instructions of the web site for the error with no
improvement (change source of power).

Anyone have any suggestions before I tackle Hp phone support.

Thanks

Sounds to me like the scanner bulb isn't warming up properly. If
changing the power source (if you were on a surge protector with
multiple other devices on it, it may have not had enough power to warm
up) didn't work, I would return it to the store, if possible, and
exchange it. You could try plugging it into an outlet in a totally
different room, use a good, heavy duty outdoor extension cord if you
can't move it.

Also, does it scan/copy properly when the computer is off? It could
also be a driver issue, try getting a newer version off the website if
you haven't already.

Thanks for the Advice.

I have tried a different tack and swapped the power supply with a
HP5160 that I have. With the different power supply it appears to
work, no problems so far.
The power supply for PSC1600 works with HP5160, but seems to take
longer to power up. Am I likely to damage the HP5160 or can I put a
call to HP to get a replacement power supply. Are they likely to
replace the power supply if it works with one printer and not the
other.

The power supply for PSC1600 is supposed to provide higher power than
the HP5160, (higher rating), but the lower rated power supply seems to
provide sufficent power where the higher rated one does not.

Thanks for any suggestions

I'm not sure about that, I think someone else in here could give you a
better answer. I'm running my HP 1100D off the power supply for a
1200D but it's only different by about 20 milliamps. I'd still suggest
just going to the store and exchanging it if you're within the return
policy time, as it's probably much less of a hassle than waiting for a
warranty replacement. If you're out of the return date, however, HP
will probably replace it for free if you're within the warranty
period.

Call HP at 1-800-HPINVENt for warranty service.

I strongly advise against using the wrong power supply even if the replacement
is rated more highly, there are several issues that can result.
Take Bob Headrick's advice and get HP's help. If warranty is not available the
correct supply can nearly always be ordered from HP.

Thanks for the advice. I intended to call HP, so I tested the Printer
again, and the problem came back.
I also noticed another problem with all printouts having a vertical
line down the left side of the page. I had thought that this problem
was because I was copying blank pages and that was the edge of the
page. It turned out that the line is on all copies.

I rang HP Support and the printer is being replaced

Thanks
