This has been a great printer for about a year, but recently it takes
up to a full minute to start printing, and then pokes along at half its
normal speed even on very small print jobs (a one paragraph e-mail, for
example). I thought it might be the driver, but I reinstalled the driver
and it has not helped. It's set up to spool and start printing
immediately, which it used to do but not it just drags along. I've run
the diagnostics and checked all settings to no avail.

Any ideas, short of a new printer will be appreciated--

Does the printer pause for 5-8 seconds at the end of every swath? If so
then one of your cartridges has either run out of ink or failed. I do
not remember if the 1210 will print with a single cartridge, but if so
you can try removing first the color cartridge and printing with just
the black, then vice versa. If the printer prints at normal speed with
one of the cartridges removed then it should be replaced with a fresh
cartridge.
