in 2003 i bought an HP psc 1200 3-in-1 (scanner, printer, copier) with
a laptop, all bundled together by walmart.

for about six months i have been using this printer hooked up to a
desktop PC that has windows XP on it. it runs extraordinarily slowly,
which is a hardship because i edit documents and need to print them
out. they take a minute or more for each page to be recognized by the
printer. once it starts printing, the speed is fine, but there is
always a long boring lull waiting for the printer to start cranking out
a page.

how can i speed things up, short of reconnecting the printer to its old
laptop?

Did the printer print slowly with the laptop? If not then you almost certainly
have a problem (maybe speed, memory etc) with the desktop rather than the
printer.

OK, it must be the desktop. the laptop was fine.

I'm not skilled enough to rip out slow boards and replace them with
better ones.
