Hi guys

I tried to install a HP buisness inkjet 1200 on my XP system using the
install CD. Install would start and near the end give me a setup error
" The hp buisness inkjet 1200 has encountered a severe error and will
now exit. Restart your computer and run setup again. I tried
downloading the driver from Hp and ran into the same problem.
Troubleshooted with HP, no help. The cd and printer work fine on my
office computer. I am able to add a printer that i already have the
driver for on my system but not the 1200.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Suggestion is right. I have spent countless frustrating hours trying to
make this work with an AIO photosmart on a wide variety of desktops and
notebooks. My best advice:

Once HP claims it has backed out, use CCleaner to clean up any
leftovers it can.

Reboot. Backup your registry. Use Registry Mechanic,
RegScrubXP, System Mechanic's Registry cleaner or your
favorite flavor thereof to clean your registry.

Reboot and backup your registry again. This time use regedit to
go it and snuff every reference to your particular printer by
hand. Reboot.

Presuming you're connecting via USB, turn on the printer but
don't plug it in yet. Put the computer end of the USB cable
right next to its chosen port. Click Start, Run, type in

services.msc

and hit return. Near the bottom of the services window is the
*Windows Installer* line; start or Restart the service. Leave
this window open.

Execute the install software again and this time don't even
blink! Watch every move it makes, respond to every request
instantly, and make certain the Installer service is always
running, even if you have to restart it when it dies. If the
HP software does one those "Installing..." notices and does not
find a live process it will choke and backout immediately.

If you were intending to network you drive down your chances of success.
The code for that is 364MB and only ~46MB if you're doing
direct-connect. I speak from 2 years, over 20 pc rebuilds and
associated attempts with the HP software, from CD, download, etc. I am
currently using a $400 HP as a fax/copier because no software beyond the
native/internal is required for those functions. Grump.
