I am having a problem with my printer which is driving me
nuts!

I first noticed the problem after a defrag of my system.

The printer has started printing at a snails pace. HP
reckon it is something to do with
XP (home) and SP2 and referred me to Microsoft. They have
not come up with an answer yet.

The strange thing is that if I uninstall & reinstall SP2
and the printer drivers the printer works fine for the
rest of the day. However next day it is back to a snails
pace!

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted regarding
this behaviour, maybe the printer has developed a fault?

Check the amount of free space on the hard drive(s), in particular, the
drive that contains the Windows installation (usually c:\windows).

Delete all files in the Internet browser cache and the Windows temporary
directory (usually c:\windows\temp). Turn the spooler off. (Start
Printers and faxes Right mouse click the printer in the listing.
Select Advanced Print directly to the printer. OK out.) Delete
all files in the printer spooler directory (usually
c:\windows\system32\spool\printers). Run chkdsk on the windows volume
and fix any and all reported errors. (Navigate to Start Run. Type cmd
to start the command processor. (Type chkdsk /f and press Enter.
Select N for no and then Y for yes. Restart Windows.) Run defrag on
all local volumes. Restart machine. Run defrag on all local volumes.

Try printing.

If that gives some measure of relief and disk space is getting under 1
GB or so, consider increasing HD space. Either remove never or
seldom-used programs and user files to secondary storage (CDs, possibly)
or swap the system to a larger HD or add a HD and reorganise the system
or some combination of these measures.

With the spooler off, less HD contiguous space is needed for temporary
files. Also, the entirety of resources is tied-up for printing. Printing
is faster; however, Windows cannot multi-task when the spooler is off
and printing is in progress.

Let us know.
