Brian

I recently installed an HP 7350 Photosmart printer onto a
new PC running Windows XP Home. I installed it and tested
it under my login. I was logged in as the system
administrator. It worked fine.

It turns out that, even though the printer shows as
installed and is the default printer, nothing prints when
other users are logged in. They are not system
adminstrators.

I chatted with HP on-line support and the best they can
suggest is that I change everyone to be administrators.
They claim that the software is designed this way, so that
only administrators can access the printer.

They have to be kidding! Does anyone know if this is
really true or have a suggestion as to how to get around
this?

Hi Brian,

Pretty sad it is that HP has no idea of how to fix this. It's a permissions
issue, and with WinXP Home, there is only one way to address this. Restart
the system in Safe mode, logon as administrator. Using Windows Explorer,
locate the C:\Windows\system32\spool folder. Right-click it and select
properties. Go to the security tab and add the other users giving them read
and execute permissions.

Hi Rick,

I did as you suggested. I found everything just as
described. After I added the other users, the information
was successfully retained, but it made no difference.

I typed some dummy WORD text and tried to print it. The
print icon in WORD works, but nothing happens.

XP is such a pain, I'm very close to starting over and
putting 2000 on it.

Hi Brian,

Ok, then (thanks to HP and their wonderful short-sightedness) go back into
Safe mode, check the properties of the printer itself from the printers
folder in the Control Panel. On the security tab, make sure "everyone" has
permission to "print".

No such luck. In safe mode there are no printers. There
is nothing to change security permissions on.
