I've had problems with my HP photosmart 8150 printer.
It looks like a 3d effect, red and blue lines round the edges.
I use it as a stand-alone printer. According to the helpdesk it is a printer
fault and not due to uitlining or the cartridges.
Does anyone know if this problem could be corrected by connecting it to the
computer and somehow downloading a software update into the printer?
If so, how would I go about it?

Sounds like (but may not be) head alignment required.
Check the printer maintenance utilities that came with the the printer
driver software. Usually achieved by printing test page with lines
printed, selecting the best aligned test patches - quite simple.

In fact it looks simpler than that - in one thread above on the 8150,
auto alignment is apparently carried out when a new cartridge is
installed. You can probably access auto-aligment via the printer software.

As I said the problem is not due to uitlining or the cartridges, the only
thing I can think of is a software problem.
