My HP Pavilion entertainment Edition is dead. No lights at all except for
were the plug inserts. Using Windows XP.

The battery has not held a charge for quite a few months. The plug
receptacle may be loose. I bought a new adapter and it was working fine. I
read that power surges can cause this.

My fans have been blowing extra hard or maybe that is background activity on
my core duo processor. I was told that overheating and clogged fans can cause
crashes.

The Internet explorer leaves a message after it closes, saying that there is
not enough memory.

The system has intermittently decided to shut down when doing a system scan
with AVG or some other programs. I just paid for AVG. Hoping that I would be
properly protected. It seemed to scan ok sometimes but would not let me order
a scan.

My outlook keeps telling me that I have closed it incorrectly whether I
close from file or the X.

I have recently been trying to do scans on my broken outlook pst files from
outlook 2000. I had to download a bunch of tools from the net to do the pst
repair. Not enough ram to scan so I said went in and removed all documents
and files that were not needed and did a remove programs. It still did not
run the software scan without crashing and restarting my system so I went
into the manager and put settings on for best performance and set the virtual
memory for 5000, I think. I did a disk clean up, a system scan and the system
still shut down when doing the scans. A couple times when this was happening
before I had asked the computer to go back to a time before I had uploaded
all of the scan tools. When it was working better. That did not seem to help.
I would think that it was a virus or a worm if I hadn't been in there making
so many changes and if my AVG scans that worked had found infections. HELP!!!!

I am a realtor that uses my computer almost all day every day for; e-mail,
web design, ad design, internet research and so much more. If there is
anything that I may be doing wrong please let me know for future use.

Is this an operating system problem? Using Windows XP. Is it an HP problem?
Or is it just user error? How can I bring it back on to work with it?

Depending on the age of the computer, several things may be wrong and none
of them will be inexpensive to fix unless you can do it yourself. It sounds
like one of your problems is dirt/dust buildup in the case, possibly
clogging the cooling fan and causing overheating. It's also possible your
hard drive is on the way out. Unlike desktops, laptops are not designed for
maintenance by nontechnical users, so I'd recommend that you have it looked
at by a professional.
Now, the big question. If the HP is old, is it worth repairing? With
perfectly good new laptops selling for under $700 (I'm talking COre 2 Duo
CPU, 4 gig RAM, 320 gig hard drive, etc.), perhaps a new one is the best
choice.
