HP Officejet won't install via USB

I have an HP Officejet Pro L7580 that I purchased specifically because my old
printer wouldn't work with Vista. The disk that came with the printer was
for XP only, and I downloaded the Vista package from HP.

Every time I try to install, I wait until I'm instructed to connect the USB
cable to the computer, but Plug&Play comes up and tries to install the
printer and can't find the drivers. My impression is that I don't want P&P
to try to install it - that's why the instructions tell you not to connect
the USB cable to the computer until told to do so.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted the infcache, uninstalled all the USB
controllers and hubs, followed the instructions in the support document at
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00843708.
I can't even point it to the right driver, since I don't know what driver is
needed and the driver apparently never gets installed because I can't get
past the connection screen.

When you plug in the printer it is detected and the install driver window
opens. As you are already in the middle of installing from a proper
installer, just close the popup window and allow the HP install program to
complete.

I've tried that, but the install program just sits at the 'make sure you're
connected and the printer is turned on' screen. The only thing I can do is
to check the 'Connect the printer later' box and finish the installation.
When I re-run the installation, choosing 'connect a device' only puts me back
in the same place - when I connect the printer, P&P comes up.

Reboot instead of re-running the installation. With luck, Vista will pick up
new hardware has been added and install the drivers. That was the only way i
could get my HP PS 7150 to install right.
