Does anyone know where I can find drivers for above? Since I got XP, the OCR
(optical character recognition) feature doesn't work. The rest works, HP
didn't seem to have anything.

See my original post, "HP didn't seem to have anything"! I have tried their
downloads, written (E-mail) to them, read their newsgroups etc., and I am
now casting further afield.

I had previously downloaded drivers from HP for this unit, after I got XP,
and these worked except for the OCR (optical character recognition) feature
for scanning. I phoned HP today about this, and they said to go buy an
off-the-shelf piece of software to handle it. Does that sound right?

Yes it sounds right. The OCR was a part of a software bundle that HP
supplies but may come from third party suppliers. To my knowledge HP does
not have such an application of its own and if it was labeled HP rather than
with the actual app developer, my guess is it is rebranded.

What you've run into is common with printers and scanners. The hardware
manufacturer will support the hardware with updated drivers but often some
of the bundled software is not compatible with a system after the system
upgraded to a later operating system. The drivers work, the hardware works
but the bundled apps become problematic and because they come from third
party vendors and perhaps because of the way they are bundled they cannot be
easily updated hence forcing the user to purchase stand alone third party
software designed specific for this function.

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes open for some, perhaps check shareware, the OCR
was handy to have, but I can do without it. I really like the Officejet45,
reliable and economical on ink, but drops connections fairly frequently.
Good at fax & photocopy too. Doesn't have USB though. Can they be converted,
I wonder?

There are adapters but it's not advisable. If you want a USB printer your
best bet is to purchase one. We've seen situations where the adapters make
the system unstable causing frequent crashing.

Thanks, maybe time for a new printer anyway!
