This printer pops the printer cartridges causing them to leak inside
the machine. Does anyone know why?

Are you sure the cartridges are leaking? There is a service station on
the side of the printer where the printer spits some ink to keep the
nozzles cleared. If the cartridges are leaking are they originals or
refills? I have never seen original cartridges leak.

Sorry it took so long....not leaking but you can hear the spray from
the inkjet. It's as if it's forcing more ink out than necessary. So the
ink ends up pooling at the bottom of the printer.

You are probably misunderstanding the servicing routine. It will
typically fire the nozzles for about one second into the service
station, an area designed to collect this ink. On a relative basis this
printer uses much less ink for servicing than the "other guys", see
http://h10060.www1.hp.com/pageyield/articles/us/en/EfficiencyArticle.html.
Printers with separate printheads often have a large "diaper" covering
the whole bottom of the printer to collect the service ink.

BTW, do not use an external switch to power off the Officejet. The
printer should be connected to a live outlet. If the printer is not
connected to a live outlet it will do more servicing since it loses
track of the time since the last print, resulting in the maximum
servicing.

So Bob, do you think it was just a fluke? The thing worked fine up
until a few months ago. We've had it over a year now. Would you
recommend buying another of the same model?

What exactly is the failure? It is normal for the printer to go through
the servicing routine. Does the printer print? Are there any error
messages or blinking lights?

No error messages. The thing prints normally. Nothing seems wrong until
it says it's out of ink. Then you can't understand why since the
cartridge is new. Then you look and all the ink has pooled!
