I'm using Windows 2000 Professional and am having the
above problem.
This is a recognized problem and the Microsoft site says

SYMPTOMS
When you try to scan an image on a Universal Serial Bus
(USB) multifunction printer/scanner device, the scan may
not succeed.

Service Pack Information
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack
for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the

Hotfix Information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it
is only intended to correct the problem that is described
