I got an HP LaserJet III (33449A) delivered in the mail and it looks
like it was damaged in the process. I heard rattling coming from the
paper tray holder area, and saw a spring about 1.4" long and 1/4" in
diameter, along with a tiny broken plastic end it was obviously supposed
to be attached to.
The printer starts up, led display goes to "READY". However, any job
that would feed paper results in a "13 PAPER JAM". I set it to manual
feed and tried a self-test (power up, offline, hit "TEST" for 5 seconds
until "05 SELF TEST" followed about ten seconds later by "06 PRINTING
TEST") which also produced the paper jam.
The roller appears to be capable of picking up and moving the paper. I
put a piece in the envelope feeder and it did move it slightly.
However, the roller does not actually "roll" more than about 75% of a
full revolution before it stops, hence the paper never makes it in. I
also notice that the pressure assembly doesn't lift the paper in the
paper tray up to the roller.
Other than the small problem that printer doesn't print, it appears to
be completely fine. It accepts commands from the parallel port and
passes its startup self test.
I've been digging around the HP parts site and can't find for the life
of me the spring that broke. I've ordered a CD containing the support
manuals, but until then I was hoping someone could point me to a
procedure that could at least help isolate the cause.
