Do these steps and reply to the group with the answers.

1. Right click on My Computer. Left click on properties. Left click on
Hardware tab. Left click on Device Manager. Scroll down the list if
necessary to Ports. Left click the + to the side of Ports. Is LPT1 showing
and if so, is it Standard, EPP, ECP or something else?

2. If LPT1 shows here, close all the windows opened. Left click on Start,
Settings, Control Panel. Double left click on Printers and Faxes. Double
left click on Add printer. Click on Next. In the next window that opens
make sure that Local printer .... is selected and that Automatically
detect... is not checked. Click Next. In the next window make sure that
Use the following port: has LPT1: (Recommended Printer Port) in the window.
If not, click on the down arrow and find it in the list. If it is not in
the list LPT1 port has not been set up by Windows and you have to cancel out
of the installation at this point. Give this info in your next post and we
will help you to set it up. If it is there, click Next. In the next window
you will see two columns, Manufacturer and Printers. In the Manufacturer
column scroll down to HP and click on it. In the Printers window now scroll
down to HP Laserjet 5 (its about 1/2 way down the list) and make sure you
have your exact HP LJ5 model selected from the list and then click on it.
Click on Next. In the Printer name field, you can leave it as it shows.
Check Yes for Do you want to use this printer as the default printer? and
then click Next. If you have File and Printer sharing turned on you will
get the Printer sharing window. Don't share it yet so make sure Do not
share this printer is checked and click Next. In the Do you want to print
a test page? you can click yes and then Next. The computer may ask for your
Windows installation CD to install the drivers at this point. Place it in
the drive and click OK. The printer should now be installed and ready for
use.

I have a LJ 4+ attached and just ran the LJ5 installation routine above and
everything works OK on my box.

Even if everything goes OK post back to let us know it is OK.

Good luck.
