HP LaserJet 4p glitching under XP but not Win98 SE

Recently bought Dell PC with Win XP that came with an all-
in-one inkjet printer. However, I still want to use an HP
LaserJet 4p for some print jobs rather than the inkjet.

The 4p worked fine on my previous machine, a Gateway
Pentium Pro which had Win 98 SE.

Under Win XP, the 4p will with glitches and overprinting.
I have reinstalled the driver for the 4p that came with
XP, but still the same problems. I have searched the Web
sites for Dell, HP and Microsoft, but cannot find a simple
solution.

Any ideas?
