I hope this is a good forum for my question.

I'm trying to install an HP Laserjet 4000 on a Windows network as a
network printer. The printer has a Jeet Direct card installed and the
hosts can ping and telnet into the printer. I've downloaded the
latest LJ4000 drivers in PCL 6 and HP Universal Postcript, but for
some reason I just can't communicate with the printer. As previously
mentioned I can ping the printer and telnet to it, but the standard
Windows and HP installation processes go no where with the error that
the printer could not be found. Almost every time a test page is
attempted it fails. A few times it printed a single page with the
following text on it:

ERROR: syntaxerror
OFFENDING COMMAND: --nostringval--

STACK:

/hfRedeFont

Does anyone have suggestions about what to do next (buying a new
printer is not an option)?

Thanks

How are you "adding" the printer in Windows? It's actually a little
counter-intuitive when adding a JetDirect-carded printer.

You start, in XP (similar in other Windows OS's), by selecting "Add Printer"
but then select "Local Printer attached to this computer" on the dialog.
After clicking on "Next", select "Create a new port" and select "Standard
TCP/IP Port" in the dropdown. Click "Next" twice to reach the "Add Port"
dialog and type the IP address of the printer in the "Printer Name or IP
Address" textbox (the "Port Name" textbox will automatically be filled).
Then click "Next" and continue to follow the dialog to install the drivers.

Hope this solves your issue.

When installing the printer, do NOT install it as a network printer.
Install it as a local printer and when asked for the port create a new
Standard TCP/IP port using the printer's IP address.
