1. Can this device be made to work with the fax? Mine detects the scannner
(and then scans) but not the fax.
If not, is it known, when MS mods or revised HP drivers will be released?
2. Has anyone had any succcesss gettting the device to work through a print
server. (Mine prints OK, but only scans when connnected directly to the PC.

Tony,

If the laserjet originally came with a software FAX capability, then that
capability must be Vista compatible. You need to determine that, either by
doing research, like on the Internet, or by contacting HP support for
information. The HP website may have such information already posted on
their website. Take a look to see whether you find the answer.

Windows comes bundled with a FAX program. You can install that if you need
a FAX capability and you can find no other solution. The bundled Windows FAX
works with a standard modem, but I don't know whether you have such a device
installed. You can always get one, if you don't have one. If this option
appeals to you, make sure the moden in Vista compatible. I have no idea
whether the Windows FAX program could work with your HP scanner/FAX machine.
You may want to check into that possibility.

Tony,

I omitted the fact that Windows FAX (called FAX and Scan) is available only
in the Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista. In
WinXP, it came bundled even in XP Home edition.

Thanks FReddy,
THe device worked under XP with HP supplied SW before I upgraded to VISta
Businesss. THe HP SW no longer works and I have not been able to get a
response from HP as to if/when they willl upgrade. Given the time since
Vista's release and the fact that the Purported functionality of Windows Scan
& Fax is very similiar to the old HP SW, I would expect that it is intended
to work with this device (ie not just "half work", detecting and driving only
the scannner part of the MFP) - hence my question.

Did this software include its own faxing and scanning utilities? I can't
find much in the way of details of the 3300mfp but if it uses TWAIN to
comunicate between device and PC then VISTA's Windows Image Acquisition /
Fax & Scan don't recognize TWAIN.

But what I found with my very old HP SJ5P scanner is that I could install
the early Deskscan 2.9 software that uses TWAIN and then I can Scan (I don't
use PC Faxing) by using the HP scanning and copying utilities. I also found
that it did put Fax to commands in Irfanview and in MS WORD and that they
work fine.

The important thing is to take the HP XP software that includes scanning
(even XP and earlier seems only to be PCL printing) and install that using
Compatibility mode set for an earlier version of Windows -- I used XP with
SP2 since I knew it ran under that -- and then started the installion with
Run as Administrator.

To do that I located the file to start the installation -- say setup.exe or
autorun.exe -- and right mouse clicked on it and selected the Compatibility
TAB. I set the version of Windows there and I checked [X] Run as
Administrator and OK'd my way out.

If the 3300mfp is connected by USB cable then make sure the cable is not
plugged into the PC so that the HP software will be installed and VISTA's
Found new Hardware does not take over.

I suggest you try this but first uninstall any HP device software you may
alaready have installed, delete and Printer or Fax icons in Printing and
Faxing. Then reboot -- making sure that USB cable is not plugged into the PC
-- and start the installation as indicated above.

Do not turn on the printer and connect the cable to the PC until either the
installation procedure tells you to or you reach [Finish].

Good luck

PS -- You don't have UAC turned OFF do you? If so try with it turned on.
