I am having problems with the scanner on the HP Laserjet 3300. It
seems that sometime the scanner head will move back and forth randomly
making an annoying noise. This makes it impossible for the user to
scan anything since the scanner is "busy." It does this even when its
not plugged into a computer. I am not really sure where to start with
this problem so if anybody has any suggestions it would really be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter Cook

This sounds like the scanner is stuck in a self test routine (kind of
like a computer post), suggesting a hardware problem. Could be any
number of things like a dirty calibration area, loose cable to the lamp
or lid, or worse.
I don't know that scanner. Are you trying to scan in reflective or
transmissive mode (paper or film)? Anything that happened before the
problem started?
Check for loose cables or anything obstructing calibration (spilled
coffee) or movement of the carriage (like a transport lock).
