I am looking for any assistance newsgroup readers can provide.

My printer works fine. If I choose to print double sided, and 'check'
the manual duplex box in the Finishing options, things start out fine.
For example, I start with my 4 page document, make the above changes,
click on OK and the printer will print pages 4 and 2.

When the printing starts, there is for a brief moment, appearing on the
screen, a printer status dialogue with the instruction for manual duplex
printing, and ending with a click OK when ready (this tells the printer
to print the remaining sides).

This status box dissappears very quickly (within a second), and the
printer sits there with only 2 pages printed and the yellow waiting
light flashing.

I've uninstalled, rebooted - re-installed and rebooted and the printer
and software all function the same.

I use XP Pro - SP2, and Zone Alarm Pro V7.0.462. I have disabled the
pop-up blocking option from within Internet Explorer 7, thinking that
perhaps this was causing the problem, but to no avail. I do not see a
pop-up blocker in Zone Alarm.

I await advice from the more knowledgeable to you. Thank you very much.

Max-

I don't have the HP 1020, but know that "manual duplex" requires you to
put the paper back into the printer tray to print the other side. It
sounds like yours is waiting for you to do that.

You may have to press a key on the printer's control panel to get it to
start printing the other side(s).

My HP 4600 doesn't have a manual duplex option in the printer driver.
To print duplex, I have to specify printing "even only" page numbers.
After printing the even pages, I put the paper back into the tray and
specify "odd only".

Fred,

Thanks for your reply. I have already inserted the paper back into the
printer. What I cannot do is click on the status window to tell the
printer to continue printing, as it does not remain on-screen for any
longer than a second.

I called HP Canada support and they are baffled by this and haveno
solution to offer me, other than to suggest that the printer may be
losing communication with the computer if the USB cable is not plugged
directly into the motherboard ( which it is). They also suggested I use
a short cable, which I am.
