Hows this for marketing!

Today I went looking at the HP laser printers

One place had two, HP1600 and HP2600n

The HP1600 was $300 (after a $100 rebate). but only has half toners
/1000 sheets.

On the other hand the HP2600n was $500 (after a $100 rebate) this has
full toners /2000 sheets.

Now the toners are (Genuine HP price) $150 each, x4 equals $600 or
$300 for half the quantity. Both use the same cartridges BTW.

If we were to add $300 to fill the toners on the HP1600 the total cost
brings it up to $600. Whereas the HP2600n is only $500 with full
cartridges.

Clever marketing.

Now for the question.

My question is what benefits are there in buying the HP2605DN over the
HP2600 - the 2600 has 16Mb of ram whereas the HP2605 has 64Mb of ram
plus the duplex etc. Can the ram be updated easily the RRP of the
HP2605dtn is $780.

What should I buy?

The 2605dtn has an additional 250 sheet tray plus some card reader slots.
The tray can be added as an extra to the 2605dn so unless you need the
card slots it's not worth it and given that card readers are so cheap I
don't see the point.

The 2605dn also has a built in duplexer and a network port, IIRC the 2600
has neither.

FWIW I've had my 2605dn for 6 months and it's been faultless apart from
the fact it chewed a couple of sheets in the duplexer a couple of times
but I think that was a wrong setting rather than an inherent fault.

Don't buy RAM from HP, it's a ripoff, but beware it's a non-standard size
despite HP saying it's not.

For of all, good for you for noticing the toner game, and looking a bit
ahead.

I have seen even smaller gaps between these two models in Canada. even
as little as $100, so you may be able to do better than the $500. The
2600N has a number of extras, besides the toner, it also has a network
card, and had a higher duty cycles, meaning, in theory, the printer
should last longer without breakdown.

I think the DN allows for duplex printing (automatically printing both
sides of the paper). That might explain why it comes with extra memory.

Often the memory today in laser printers is standard, and very much more
costly when purchased direct versus picking it up locally, but double check.
