I am running Windows XP Pro, my PC is a Dell Dimension.
As soon as I upgraded from Windows ME to XP pro, my HP
Laser Jet 4L stopped responding. This is what I did,
1.Checked my BIOS to "ECP", 2. Deleted the printer and
drivers, 3. On port LPT 1 changed settings to
disabled "Enable bidirectional support" 4. click "use any
interupt assigned to the port"
IT WORKED GOOD...UNTIL I HAD TO RE-BOOT OR TURN OFF THE
MACHINE. When the machine would come back from a re-boot.
I had to do the whole process.
IS THERE A WAY NOT TO GO THROUGHT THE WHOLE PROCESS IF I
HAVE TO RE-BOOT?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Please clarify the setting of the port LPT1 in your system's BIOS. Is it set
to SPP or similar?

Try reinstalling the printer using an HP Laserjet 5
postscript driver. The printer will still have full
functionality and it'll have better config options. The
Laser 4, Laser 5, Laser 1100 and Laser 1200 will all run
using that driver and have less troubles.
