HP Laptop <D> Recovery?

Mr. Arnold

I have had this HP laptop that came with Vista Home Premium since 04/2007. I
brought Vista Ultimate and upgraded over the top of Vista HP. The <D> still
has the 5gb of disk space for the Restore. I guess it's the HP area to
create a Restore DVD from, in case I needed to reinstall Vista HP. Do I need
that space on <D> or can I wipe it out, because I have a Vista Ultimate
install DVD?

Hi,

Is your copy of Ultimate an upgrade or a full version? If it's an upgrade
and catastrophe happens, you'll need to reinstall the original OS, then the
upgrade. As a full version, you could just clean install. However (there is
a gotcha here), many laptops require proprietary drivers that may not be
found in the retail disks, so a clean install of Ultimate may not go
smoothly. Unless there is a machine-critical need for the 5GB of space, I'd
suggest you leave it as is.

If you haven't already done so, create a set of recovery discs. Then if you
really need the space, you can safely remove the recovery partition.
