This information may be of assistance to others. I recently purchased a HP
notebook (DV5178us) - one reason it's "certification" by HP that is was
"Vista Ready". However several attempts to install Vista *Clean, upgrade
and new partition) failed - no errors reported - notebook just shut down.
Tried recommended "adjustments' to BIOS, drives and so forth. BTW - Vista
compatibility utility reported everything a "go".
HP site provided no definitive help. An E-mail to HP brought a personal
response from a Tech apologizing that to date they (support staff) had not
received any training regarding Vista
So, back to the farm - once again I went the HP site and after "fishing
around" finally came across a listing of current upgrades and previous
versions of drivers and BIOS dual core processor support - notebook came
with Intel Duo-Core, one gig memory and 100 gig HD. Yesterday (December 3),
a week after installing the changes, I decided to give Vista installation
another try - and enjoyed welcome success.
An interesting note - Vistas score on was 4.5/5 on all items except the
NVIDIA graphics which it rated as a "2" (however Aero is fine) - followed by
a statement that the overall score was equated to the lowest score -
therefore the notebook had a score or "2".
So - hang in!!!
