I recently purchased a HP Deskjet 5940 using the 90 series of ink
cartridges. While shopping for spare cartridges, I have noticed that
the large tricolor cartridge 97($35) has 14ml of ink whereas the photo
99($25) cartridge has 13ml of ink.
It is obvious that the 99 is the better value but is there any reason
that I would not use the 99 for all my color printing.
Thank You
Phil M
Normal printing you'd use a black cartridge a tri-color with C M Y
divided up. The black cartridge tends to be huge. The usual
combination is the 96 (21 ml black) /97 (14 ml color) for standard
black and color printing, and the 97/98 for photo printing. I don't
know whether the 99 goes with the 97, it's a newer tank that has the
Vivera ink rather than HP's older standard photo inks. I suspect HP
would prefer you to use the 97 Plus cartridge with it.
HP 99 works in combination with the tri color tank to give you six
color printing, it contains black, photo cyan, and photo magenta,
split up. It has no yellow ink at all.
You cannot use the 99 on its own. Plus, most people tend to use more
black ink than any other color. Once you run out of black ink on the
99, then you would have to replace the cartridge. The black ink on the
99 is different, it's dyebased for photos, but doesn't look as good
for text as the single black cartridge.
If all you're doing is printing photos, the 99 is your best bet. Just
remember that you still have to buy the standard 97 color tank with
it, as it has light, photo dye colors and no yellow. So if you're
doing mostly document printing, it's cheaper to go with the 96
black/97 color.
If you have one of the new printers that only takes the microscopic 92
black cartridge (5 ml) then you probably /are/ better using the 98.
But since I see that yours takes the 97, it probably takes the 96 as
well.
