I loaded the drive onto my computer and it works fine but
when I start up windows, I get a "Found new Hardware"
message and it automatically goes to the New Hardware
Wizard. Wizard can not find the proper information whether
on the C:\ drive or if I insert the installation disk and
point it there. I have to cancel the Wizard and everything
works fine. How do I turn off the Hardware Installer Wizard
for this?

You don't turn off the "Hardware Installer Wizard" as it is PNP and
always happens when Windows boots. Does it give you any detail about
what hardware it has found? There might be a setup program you need to
run on the CD that came with the DVD writer. That would install the
driver in Windows and therefore on the next boot when you went through
the wizard it would find the needed driver.

When I start Windows up every time, I get a Found
New Hardware notice and about 15 seconds later a Device
Installer Error - Windows could not load the installer for
CDROM. Contact your Hardware Vendor for assistance. I click
on ok and the Wizard comes up. Whether I tell it to search
a folder or a CD or just click ok and let it do it's own
work, it quickly comes up with a message saying it can not
find the drivers. I click ok and Wizard ends. The Drive
works fine after this, even though Wizard was unable to
install it. All the Read and Write functions work,
including the DLA (Drive Letter Access).

I looked on the HP site and there is nothing that addresses
this so I am thinking it is a Windows issue. Thanks for any
direction you can provide here.

One item that the wizard looks for when installing new hardware is the *.inf
file for the particular device. The problem is that the wizard can get fooled if
there are many *.inf files present in the device's installation cdrom or floppy
diskette for the different versions of Windows or if the path to the specific
*.inf file is unclear. Telling the wizard to do a general search is self-defeating.
Try a little user intervention by studying the contents of the device's installation
cdrom or floppy diskette and locating the most suitable *.inf file needed to
complete the new hardware installation. And there are times when the
situation becomes more maddening due to lousy programming of the
*.inf file itself and some manual editing may become necessary but this
is another story.

Thank you very much for answering my problem. I am not sure
how to use this Newsgroup as none of these seem to be
appearing there. I found your answer accidently by using
the search key. I tried to email you but I just get an
Undeliverable notice.

As you suggested, I searched the HP DVD Installation disk
and the only .inf files there are the autorun.inf file and
a group of files in the directory
"misc\updates\s3graphics_pm133\....." There are
..inf files in the Win2K, Win 95 98, WinNT, and WinXP
subdirectories. The one in the Win2K subdirectory is called
s3savnb.inf . When I point Wizard to this file it tells me
that it is an upgrade file
for an S3 graphics card controller. To the best of my
knowledge, I do not have this graphics card so I did not
run the installation.

As I said in my original query, the drive works well even
though I get the Found New Hardware Wizard and have to
cancel it. Originally I installed the drive by first
installing the HP software
(according to instructions) then attaching the DVD drive.
It has not given me any problems since the installation
with the Wizard exception. When I ask the Wizard to search
for PNP devices, it
does not find the HP DVD but on start up, every time, I get
a Found New Hardware notice and about 15 seconds later a
Device Installer Error - Windows could not load the
installer for CDROM.

Thanks again for taking your time to answer. Any direction
you can provide would be appreciated.
