First, the disclaimer that I am a very new advanced computer user (just gained any knowledge i have from trying to fix this problem) so please forgive me, 1) if i state or ask the obvious and 2) please if answering, spell out for me clearly what i should do as some terminology is unknown to me. thanks so much.

ok.
windows will not start, keeps ending in BSOD. Error message on blue screen says to run a CHKDSK /F but I cannot get to safe mode or command prompt.

The weird thing is that i can, however, play DVDs and music (without audio) through the (hideous) quickplay feature, in fact computer only seems to turn on by pressing quickplay buttons= power button does not work.

also, computer will not shut down. i have to take battery out or unplug to turn it off and it only goes in and out of hibernation mode.

finally, i would take a wild guess that my harddrive is not corrupt because i am able to go into quickplay and see all of the items on my c drive, i just cannot access them.

Can anyone help? ive tried HP support center via chat and phone 4 different times, best buy where i bought the thing geek squad is clueless... here is some technical information as well as what ive already tried to do and failed to fix below:

HERES WHAT IVE TRIED, TO SAVE SOME TIME IN YOUR RESPONSE
-Diagnostics Test in BIOS setup section passes.
-Like an idiot i listened to best buy and bought an xp home edition disc. didnt work. it appears to load everything and then gives me BSOD at the very end.
-reseated hardrive as well as memory modules in machine.

one final thing i should note before moving on to the technical specs of my machine is that when i press f11 (??) at the hp logo it gives me an error, stop: c0000218 (registry file failure) registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemroot\system32\config\SAM

ok TECHNICAL DETAILS:
i have HP Pavillion notebook dv6000nr (it also says dv6135nr on bottom)
running windows XP
this is one of the computers with the Media Center Quickplay feature
BIOS Version F.05

i dont know what other info you may need. the only other thing i think may be relevant is that i do think i accidentally installed both Norton antivirus and mcafee on it, obviously not knowing at that point that was a no no. if that is the problem though, no clue how to remove any software when i cant get to command prompt or safe mode or my desktop, etc.

if anyone can help me with anything, or even just explain to me what some of these issues entail, i would really appreciate it. hp seems to be clueless and so does best buy.

thanks
