My HP Deskjet 820 cxi does a great Printer Test Page. When I go to
print a document from Word (or any) the quality is lousy. What things
should I check? I cleaned the resevoir as instructed by the HP help
site.

Some inkjet printers are "lousy" at text, especially when compared to a
laser printer.

How is your printer at printing colored pictures? After all, that is
what a color printer is really designed to do.

If you want good black and white, get a good black and white printer.
Like a laser printer.

Ill take a bet that you are using a newer operating system with built
in drivers - not the original HP drivers. HP have a policy of letting
their customers go hang with new operating systems they dont provide
updated full functioning drivers.!
Therefor crap print from a perfect printer - Makes you buy new
printers! :(D

Which version of Windows? One problems is that the 820 was HP's first
host-based printer. You cannot try a driver for another printer. If you
are running 2K or XP, you are probably stuck with the stock MS driver.

It may be cheaper in the long run to buy a newer printer. Even the
cheapest printers can probably do better than the 820 ever could.

Quality is lousy how? When you do a File > Print there should be a
Properties or similar where you can choose the quality of printout
(set the defaults in Control Panel > Printers) otherwise if you just
hit the Print button on the Word toolbar you typically don't get the
print options dialog.
