Dear people,

To keep it short: laptop & XP home, installed HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One for
regular use; all is fine. I also have a Mustec A3 scanner that I installed &
used a while later. Then the HP doesn't work anymore: after uninstallingBOTH,
I get the HP not installed. During the installation I get this message:
Error 1321: the installer has insufficient privileges to modify the file
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\hpqgnds2 C:\Scan.msi failed with return code 1603
exit code=1603 Go to hp.com/support for info and help for 'fatal error' and
'MSI.Scan'

The folder 'twain_32' in the Windows directory contains the files 'hpqgnds2'
and 'hpqgnds2.tmp' and 'wiatwain.ds'. I assume the files 'hpqgnds2' and
'hpqgnds2.tmp' have to be removed but they cannot as this folder is a
systemmap that cannot be removed. The HP helpdesk could not help me either
and they advised to re-install XP. Before doeing this, I hope to find
another solution to this problem and re-installation is unnecessary.

Thanks in advance, Max.

XP (and below) cannot cope with two scanners. Choose which one you want to
install and keep the other one uninstalled.

Thanks Cari.

I see but the point now is that I want to clean the Twain folder (see below)
without the need to install XP all over again.

"XP (and below) cannot cope with two scanners"

XP can and does work with two scanners, UNLESS the scanner software (usually
drivers) has problems.
Case in point, this XP-SP-3 system has an HP3970 scanner (can be a pain to
get to work properly with XP, suggest the HP driver and Viewscan.
(Unfortunately, the usual install from CD also loads HPs app software with
the drivers.)
The second scanner, a Brother multifunction 420CN (Uses network connection
and networking software, as well as Viewscan.)
Also, for whatever it's worth, the original XP USB driver package for the
brother printer would not install or uninstall properly on a number of
XP-SP1a systems.
Why two scanners?
The HP is used for single page scanning, usually high resolution scans of
such things as pictures. The Brother will scan multiple paged documents
using it's multipage feeder at lower resolution. The page positioning is not
as exact as it might be with manual placement.

If you are referring to the XP "built in" scanner functionality, getting it
to work properly with just one scanner can be quite a trial. For whatever
reasons, the "Twain" area has been a large source of frustration over
various win versions and quite a few scanners from many companies.

The two Hp files mentioned by the user exist on this system as well.
