Hi
My HP Deskjet 920c is flashing and indicating the color cartridge is
unhappy. It won't print. I am using the black ink only and have never
printed color except to test it once.
How can I get this thing to print black again ? It was working great !
Any ideas appreciated...the help section keeps telling me to replace the
cartridge !!!!
Thanks, Pete

So why don't you just replace the cartridge? It doesn't last forever, even
if you don't use it. Seems like the simplest solution to me.

$30 plus tax is why (for something I can't use).....How can I make this
thing work without the cartridge or with the old cartridge. I don't need or
want the color features !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonder what wore the color cartridge out ? Do they time out? How can I reset
the timer....as this is gotta be the problem!!!)
Thanks
Pete

If you don't use/need color, you should look into a laser printer. I
usually see some low end ones for $100 after rebate. With inkjets, the ink
inside can dry up if you don't use it for a while - or the contacts could
have just gone bad because of the long period of inactivity. Take out the
color cartridge, and look at the bottom near the print head - what is the
date? Hope you can get your problem solved, I know ink is expensive. Good
luck :)

Yes you do. Most ink jet printers use magenta from the color tank to make
the black look more black. As you've discovered, without ink in the color
cartridge, they don't even start to print. If you just print black, go for
a laser printer.

The old cartridge is burned. You could buy, or find from a friend, 1-2 empty
color cartridges and you will happy again for the next years!

There is no timer, so there is no reset. Cartridges can fail over time for a
number of reasons. One thing you might try is cleaning the cartridge contacts
as shown at the following:

I followed up your link and found that it addressed an issue with my
840c. Had replaced the colour cartridge and it said the new cartridge
was empty. Emailed HP who suggested reinstalling drivers and defragging
my ntfs file system.

Thanks very much for your help
