I have an HP DeskJet
842C with which I have had no problems with until recently when
inserted new cartridges, both black and color. Now, for some reason,
if I print a picture or anything from the internet, the predominant
color or text is pink. If I paste it into Word, it prints black. I
have tried re-inserting the cartridges, but that didn't help. My
printer manual does not give instructions on how to re-calibrate the
printer........PLEASE HELP!

Probably need to clean the contacts on the print cartridges-easy to do, just
use some isopropyl alcohol. You(should) can buy lint free swaps to do this
job but I've used a Q-tip in a pinch with no problem.

Theres a clear plastic strip behind the print cartridges,
clean the strip with isopropyl alcohol, might fix it.

Print a diagnostic self test as shown at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=bpd07098&product=61012&dlc=en&lang=en#N1019F.
Most likely the yellow and cyan sections of your cartrdige are not working.
This is probably due to an old "new" color cartrdige. Check the "install by"
date on the cartrdige, or check the warranty date as shown at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bua02014.
If the cartrdige is within warranty contact your dealer or HP for a
replacement. If the cartrdige is old and beyond the warranty date replace it
with a fresh cartrdige.

Do not use alchol to clean the encoder strip as this can damage the fine lines
printed on the strip that are required for proper printer operation. The
problem you describe is not related to encoder strip issues.
