HP Deskjet 820 Cxi lost

My DeskJet 820Cxi uses the drivers Provided in Windows XP
Pro, which is my OS.
When I install the printer it works fine. When I turn off
and reboot, the printer won't work. To get it to work I
must change the Port (for example from LPT1 to LPT2 - it
doesn't matter which, as long as it is different from the
previous one), in Printer/Properties/Ports and in Control
Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Ports. I must do
this each time I reboot.

Can anybody help with this problem. Thanks

a) Ensure that the LPT port settings in the BIOS are set to EPP.

b) In the Device Manager, under the settings for the LPT port.... Port
Settings.... Ensure that Enable Legacy Plug and Play detection is checked.
