I recently upgraded to XP from 2000. I only used the computer for a couple of
weeks and I got major problems. The HP 812C installed but I remember getting
a message warning about compatibility. The printer seemed to work ok but
something seems to have corrupted the system.

The computer kept booting on its own and soon I could not boot past the blue
error screen. I tried Rolling Back and using the Last Good Configuration, but
neither helped. The computer kept getting worse. I DO NOT think it is a
virus.

After the upgrade to XP. a couple of times I got wavy lines coming out of
sleep mode and I needed to reboot. The last unfixable problem was a corrupt
AVG (virus protection) that can not be fixed.

I plan on having the system reloaded with XP again but I don't want to be
back with the same problems again.

Besides the printer I have not installed much. I have a USB hub, I installed
ACDSee and have used camera all of which are XP compatible.

Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.

The printer you specified should work quite well with any XP system.

It would be helpful if you related exactly what error was reported here.

Hello Eddie:

It is most difficult to pass advice Eddie if we don't have more good
details.

Please confirm that your HP printer's model number is C6411B.

Can you please tell us about your system's hardware details beginning
but not limited to make/model and the little details about your
version of XP? OEM, Retail, MCE, Home, Professional, x86, x64, yada,
yada, yada. How much RAM... Be generous with your details.

Had you updated to service pack 3 and all its subsequent updates?

Are you using XP's built in driver for your HP Printer?

I used Add Printer and followed the prompts.
The 812C was listed.
I believe I did use the built in driver.

Save any important data files and do a "Clean Install" of XP

Then download as many drivers as you can find from
the PC Manufacture's site (Do not use Windows Update to install drivers)

I believe in this individual instance, HP would have the OP use the
C6411B driver from the Microsoft install media and/or Windows Updates.

Do you think it is possible / probable that installing the printer the way
that I did could cause all those problems?
The printer is old and the ink is hard to come by so I’m going to buy a new
one, but I’d still like to know the probable cause of my problems.

No, more likely not related to the printer.

Exactly how did you upgrade from Win 2000?

It was installed by a tech.
It was a clean install.

I did a checkdisk when I began getting the problem.
It ran OK.

The tech thought the hard drive was OK after a quick test but they tested it
again today and they said more and more sectors are showing up as bad.

I assume (and hope) hard drive is going.

I’m hoping a new hard drive and a reload does it.

The tech though as you did that the printer was not the fault. He said if
the drivers were bad that I wouldn’t get it to print at all.

Since it was a "Clean Install" then it
would be a hardware issue. The hard drive
is a good place to start but is by no means
the only hardware (memory for example)
that could be the problem. But if the tech.
has the right diagnostic tools and you are
getting bad sectors as reported, then the drive
should be replaced (after checking that the drive
cable is OK).
