HP Deskjet 812 funny letters

IT is a wierd problem that I tried everything on HP website and nothing
worked, when I give a printing order, it goes through, then it pulls the
paper, hangs for 20sec then the paperfeed blinks, I press resume then it
spits out the paper with one line of funny characters, switched cables same
thing, tried the self-test, the printer prints OK, it is driving me nuts!

It has all the elements of a bad driver install
