My printer runs without problems on XP with the standard XP driver, but it does not have the same comfort features as it has within Windows98. The XP printer does not have the double sided printing feature. On Win98, it was possible to print first only the odd pages, that return the pages to the printer and print the even pages onto the opposite side.
Is there any way to bring this feature to XP?

You might try click on Start/Control Panel/Faxes and Printers. Find your
printer there, right click on it then click on Properties.

this is because in win98 you used the driver from HP, but in XP you are
using the simple driver that came with XP.
You can take a look at www.hp.com to see if there is a driver for your
printer and XP by hp, although I have seen them say on their site for
various models that they have not made another driver and to use the one XP
supplies.

It seems (www.hp.com) that HP hasn't seen fit to make XP drivers for the
690c that support alll the features available in Win9x. (They didn't make a
complete set of Windows 2000 drivers, either.)

I believe that there are third-party utilities that do what you want, but I
have not used one and can't recommend anything. (HP offered full XP drivers
for my 970c, fortunately.)

Good luck.

XP iolny comes with simple HP drivers for older printers. The only way
to get all the features is to buy a new printer with full features.
HP thinks its a waste of time writing drivers for old equipment.

It isn't that H-P thinks that it a waste of time to write new drivers.
Rather it is simple greed on their part. The older printers use ink
cartridges that hold more ink (Example my HP DeskJet 722C's Black
cartridges holds 42 ml and is refillable , some of the newer HP printers
Black cartridges hold 17ml and cost at least 2/3 of the cost of the
722C's Black). Also the double side print is deactivated on the XP
drivers (IE more paper) Thanks god for the FinePrint add on program. I
imagine most of the other printer manufacturers are doing the same
thing. Ink and paper are very profitable for them. They could care less
about the consumer having to replace a perfectly good printer. Only the
bottom line matters. I understand that companies have to make a profit
but our good old so called American companies are getting too greedy.
The same thing has happened with the scanners also. My HP 5PSE scanner
didn't have an XP driver for the scsi interface card. How ever looking
through these news forums I was able to find a driver from the original
Mfgr of the scsi card included with the scanner and I use it perfectly
well under XP. When either of both my older printer and/or scanner craps
out physically or I find a printer or scanner that really have greatly
superior capabilities that I want or really need I will think about
upgrading.
